Musical St. Cruz

Music is also one of the best know cultural fortes of the village. In mando competitions (mando is a traditional love song sung during weddings in old days but today is respected as an important cultural heritage) the village normally contributes with many groups in different categories. The late Maestro Jose Santana Cota was a genius in music and many of his students have prospered not only in India, but also overseas.

This is all I am posting on St. Cruz. I believe these blog posts have provided you relevant information on St. Cruz. Thanking You Regards VIshal P.G.

Thank You.

Crown Club of Santa Cruz

St. Cruz is famous for sports and culture too. There is a sports club born in St. Cruz which is known all over Goa.

Crown Club of Santa Cruz, Goa

Crown Club of Santa Cruz has excelled over the years both in football and volleyball as well as in athletics and body building competitions. Many players who have started as amateurs, have nowadays achieved a lot in their careers, thanks to the club's glory as well as the ever supporting public who will make sure they attend any match in large numbers.

In my next post i shall upload more info on St. Cruz. Till then... Thank You.
The chapel of Our Lady of Livra Febre

The chapel of Our Lady of Livra Febre is the main place of religious importance. The visiting Chaplain of this beautiful chapel is Fr Almir. This chapel was built about 50 years ago. It looks after the spiritual needs of the 400-odd Catholics in the ward. Many programmes like Tiatr, carol singing, etc take place in the chappel. The feast of this chapel is celebrated in the month of May.

Heritage Homes of St. Cruz

St. Cruz has a large number of some important architectural landmarks reminescent of the Portuguese style such as the Dempo House, the Dias House, the Pinto House, the Kenkre house and the magnificient Nachinolkar house.

The Kenkre House

The Dempo House

The Dias House

A characteristic of this style is the existence of large frontal balconies with 'moulded' seats either made up of stone or brickwork, where people could seat comfortably at the end of the day and chat away the events of the day with all family members. However, nowadays, majority of the buildings constructed are just high rise and 'box' type flats but these still have their modern balconies made up of concrete.

In my next post, I shall share more details on St. Cruz. Till then... Thank You.
Swami Samarth Mandir

On the way to Chimbel from Merces alongside there is a beautiful temple known as the "Swami Samarth Mandir". Devotees from far away  areas come here to worship and take blessings. Every sunday at 6 pm there is a Naamjap Satsang Programme which is organised by the temple committee in the temple for the devotees.
Every poornima there is Puja in the temple and it is followed by Maha-Prasad.

Mary immaculate church…

St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church

This was the first Syrian Christian Church which was built in Ribandar in 1973, it was renovated in October 2001. St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, overlooking the Ribandar causeway that dovetails into Panjim, conducts daily service every day, according to Fr Joshua OIC, who owes allegiance to the Bethany Ashram in Kerala.
  Krishna mandir…

This is the very old temple of Lord Krishna. Every year there is a Maha puja followed by Maha Prasad. All people of the village come and work together. After this puja there are Nataks and competitions for the village people.

       Ram mandir…

Ram mandir was built in 1992. It’s a small temple which has idol of lord ram sita and lakshman. Besides this temple there are also small temples having idols of Hanuman and Maha dev.
                                       Cashew Cultivation in Chimbel.

“Cashew”  also known as “Caju” is a famous fruit of Goa. The fruit as well as the seed is edible.  Cashewnut  is a dryfruit that every tourist is sure to buy when he visits Goa. There is a vast plantation of cashew found in chimbel. During the cashew season the aroma of cashew is spread all over the forest. The cajukars extract the juice from cashews to make Hurrak and Niro. They also make "Caju Feni".
Birds and animals like Peacock and Fox are also found in these forests.

                                                                Chimbel

Driving 6 kms east of Panaji city, but keeping away from the beaten path, one reaches the little- known village of Chimbel in the Ilhas of Tiswadi Taluka.
The habitat can be reached from both from both, Merces and Ribandar.
Chimbel is a neighbor to Ribandar to the North, Merces in the west and Curca Santana on the East.

In Chimbel there aren’t as many as large mansions as in the other villages of Goa. But the village is blessed with a hardworking population, majority of whom are from the kunbi community.

Interesting Places in St. Cruz - Char Khabbe (Four Pillars)

St. Cruz has several places of interest, Almacho Khuris (Souls Cross), Saint Anthony's Chappel, Char Khabbe (Four Pillars), etc.. In this post I am sharing to you about this place called 'Char Khabbe (Four Pillars)'.

The four pillars, popularly known as Char Khambe are half way on the old road from Santa Cruz to Panaji. Physically, the site acts as a buffer between the hectic urban environment of Panaji and the serene village environs of Santa Cruz. The place, a part of the unique Goan landscape, is very fragile and irreplaceable in nature and any thoughtless human intervention can cause drastic and irreparable consequential damage in the long run. The site is a low-lying tidal flood plain and is part of the natural drainage pattern during the rains on account of the surrounding topography. The marshy wetland is a host to mangrove vegetation which plays a definite role in the maintenance of vital ecological balance. The place is also a popular habitat to a wide variety of local and migratory birds and is a bird-watcher's delight. It is quite common to find researchers and bird lovers from distant countries here, with their cameras trained. During the Portuguese rule, the freedom fighters gathered here and held meetings, discussions, etc.. making it a very important landmark of Goa. This place also marks the start of the Vasantrao S. Dempo Marg. This road stretches upto 2 kms. This road is named after late Shri Vasantrao Sinai Dempo, who is the Founder Chairman of the Dempo Group of Industries.

In the next post I shall share more information about the places of interest in St. Cruz. Till then... Thank You.

History of St. Cruz

St. Cruz is known for its holy emergence of people.. it has people with various religions.. but the origin of this village was seemed to be formed out of a dispute which is explained as in : Once, the villagers of Santa Cruz and Taleigao, a neighbouring village, entered into a dispute as regards to the exact boundary between both lands, the later accusing the former of encroaching into their territory. So both had agreed that they should consult an oracle on a certain day and get the solution to the problem. These days, one would sprinkle a mixture of cooked rice with the blood of a cock on the set lines between villages, amidst dancing and and beating the 'gumot' (a bongo like instrument).
Prior to the event, the villagers of Calapor went to the spot they wanted to mark as the boundary, and dug a hole there. Then they lowered a coffin with a live man in it and, after smartingly placing back the earth fill over it, they had provided a vent pipe for the man to breath. So when the moment arrived, both village leaders implored the oracle to answer their prayer. Bowing down in abeyance to Mother Earth, they waited patiently for the occult decision. A long silence prevailed. They kept repeating " To whom does this land belong?". And from the depths of the earth a faint voice replied: "Calapor!Calapor!Calapor!" to the joy and exultation of the Calaporkars. Sadly and frustrated, the Talaleigaokars accepted the veredict and went home. Everyone in Calapor merried the whole night - and totally forgot the poor man inside the coffin! They returned the next day to the spot to dig up the coffin, only to find that the poor man had already passed away. In the coffin, they found only crawling worms. As a symbol of self punishment, so the story goes, each man took a worm and placed it in his hip belt (this coined the term 'bendecho kiddo' or 'hip worm'). On that very spot, tradition says, stands 'Almacho Khuris' (Souls Cross) - the cross that has been marking the boundary after Christianity replaced traditional symbols.
